These units simulate the sound of a diesel locomotive engine. The effect varies from an idling sound when the loco is stationary, to the distinctive sound of increasing engine "revs" as the loco moves away. Variable controls are provided for altering the levels of turbo whine and cylinder rhythm, and the overall tone and volume level are adjustable. Fine tuning the controls allows the user to simulate a variety of diesel engine classes.

The DESS-12 is suitable for loco mounting in O gauge and larger scales, including ride-on locomotives running on 12V traction batteries, or can be used off-loco with a 12 to 20V dc power supply on an indoor layout.

When used on a layout, two wires are taken from the controller and fed into the module, to make the speed of the engine effect follow the speed of the train. On ride-ons, only a single wire connection is needed to the controller.
